Individuals Stopping Slimming Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals buying such medications should be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

The team note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Doctors propose the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Accounts

Users who have stopped the jabs describe a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a trigger activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle management.
